We recently held our first team meeting, giving our educators a chance to come together, connect, share ideas, and continue growing as a team. 

A special part of our meeting focused on something that is at the heart of our center - the belief that play is learning together. We were fortunate to spend this time training with Kathy Doody, Professor in the Exceptional Educational Department and BSCCC Board Chair, who guided our team in exploring the important role play has in children's learning and development.

As part of the training, educators broke into small groups and were given a variety of random, everyday materials. Each group was challenged to use those materials to create a learning experience for children. What started as a simple collection of items quickly turned into opportunities for creativity, problem-solving, language development, early math and science concepts, social skills, and so much more.

The activity was a wonderful reminder that creating meaningful learning experiences doesn't always require an elaborate lesson plan or special materials. With a little creativity and intention, almost anything can become an opportunity to learn through play.

The same idea comes to life in our classrooms every day. A child stacking blocks is exploring balance and early math concepts. Pretend play encourages language, imagination, and social-emotional development. Exploring different materials allows children to make predictions, solve problems, ask questions, and discover new possibilities. 

Our training encouraged us to look at play through the eyes of a child and recognize the learning hidden within those simple, joyful moments. As educators, our job is to provide inviting opporunities, follow children's interests, encourage their curiosity, and help extend their thinking while still allowing them freedom to explore.

We are proud to have a team that continues to learn, reflect, and grow together. Experiences like this help us bring fresh ideas and even greater intention into our classrooms - all while keeping childhood exactly what it should be: full of curiosity, discovery, connection, and plenty of play.

Because at BSCCC, play isn't separate from learning - play is learning.
